The Kenya Medical Research Institute conducts clinical and biomedical research and serves as a centre of excellence for health research in Africa. It works closely with the Kenyan Ministry of Health and various national councils and committees on issues of research policy and priorities. KEMRI also works very closely in collaboration with both local and international organisations in research and capacity building by way of knowledge exchange.

International collaborators include those with resident staff and laboratories within KEMRI such as; Japan International Co-operation Agency, Japan, The World Health Organisation, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Welcome Trust. KEMRI has well trained and highly qualified scientists in various fields of medical and clinical research.

The centre for clinical research (CCR) which is involved in this project, is mandated to carry out research in clinical and drug trials, epidemiology, field and laboratory diagnosis in Leishmaniasis, malaria, schistosomiasis and HIV among other parasitic diseases. CCR has carried out clinical trials in Leishmaniasis in the past and is currently undertaking a field diagnostic trial.
