The Molecular Biology Laboratory in the Department of Parasitology and Microbiology is the heart of the programme in molecular biology at Makerere University. The laboratory collaborates with the Biochemistry department, the University Teaching Hospital and the Livestock and Health Research Institute (LIRI), which has a specialised treatment-centre for sleeping sickness, and has been a key collaborator in programmes for surveillance and control of trypanosomiasis in the country. Projects ongoing in the laboratory include recombinant tubulin vaccine development against trypanosomiasis, molecular diagnostics and study of drug resistance in trypanosomiasis. Other work has been concerned with molecualr epedimiology, the cloning and expression and validation of parsite molecules as drug and vaccine targets. |
