The Institute of Tropical Medicine is a research and higher education institute specialised in tropical medicine. It is heavily involved in collaboration research projects with Southern partners, particularly through networking and training of Southern researchers. Within the Institute of Tropical Medicine, two Units of the Parasitology Department are involved, both with a longstanding expertise in Leishmaniasis and Human African Trypanosomiasis.
